In our production, excerpts from the journals reproduced in Reborn Journals
and Notebooks 1947-1963 which expose Sontag's younger self (sometimes very young
indeed) are juxtaposed with material drawn from Sontag's later published works. In
this mature voice, we encounter the Susan Sontag of public intellectual life, the Sontag
known for her celebrated published works and political causes. This older voice dissects
and connects to the earlier material -- much as the later Sontag made copious margin
notes in her earlier journals and books -- acting as critic, creator, navigator, and narrator
as we chart the development of a prismatic mind.
